It can also make use of leftover rice, and cheese so get ready to make a quick and easy brown rice bowl that will be sure to satisfy since it is filled with protein and fiber!

Broccoli, Cheddar and Beef Brown Rice Bowl & Uruguay Part 2: Colonia Del Sacramento [Clean, Gluten-free]

Last week I started to tell you a little bit about Colonia Del Sacramento, Uruguay. You can read that post here if interested! As I mentioned, it is a UNESCO world heritage site and makes for a lovely day trip from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Coastal Area

We stayed in the Oriental Hostel, within walking distance from the ferry port and historic Colonia Del Sacramento. There are many shops to look in and the coastal area is beautiful.

Another Coastal View

We spent some time on the above rocks just enjoying the view, breeze and sun. Around this area is part of the old fort walls, if you will. A barrier from the surrounding water. This used to be an old Portuguese colony way back in the day (1600s), and many of the old buildings can be explored in this area.

The streets are all cobbled and there is more of an older feel to it. The old convent ruins and lighthouse are a main attraction for the area.

One of the parts of other countries that I will always have a hard time with, though is the coffee. It’s always so small, and so bitter. I am used to large American sized coffees and am a big fan. We went to this restaurant for breakfast and I asked for a coffee. They asked me if I wanted an espresso, or an American sized coffee. Obviously, I asked for an American sized coffee and was very excited I was finally going to get a “normal” sized coffee. Well…I was wrong. An “American sized coffee” was still quite small. See?!

Granted, I laughed when this came out and it’s true- I could barely drink it, lol. I had to keep diluting it with my water bottle, lol. Anyway, when we were ready to go, we got our bus tickets (around the same location as the ferry) and took the 2.5 hour trip to Montevideo, Uruguay for the next part of our trip! Stay tuned for that as it includes an interesting night in a chicken trailer! LOL! Before I sign off though, let me leave you with my favorite picture from this part of the trip!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup brown rice cooked
  • 1/2 cup broccoli steamed
  • 1/4 cup cooked meat of choice
  • 1 T cheddar cheese
  • taco seasoning
  • hot sauce optional topping

Instructions

  1. If you don't already have brown rice cooked, cook according to package instructions (the same goes for your meat, season with taco seasoning if cooking from scratch)

  2. Steam your broccoli in the meantime

  3. If you are adding separately, add your brown rice, cooked meat, broccoli to a bowl

  4. Mix in some taco seasoning if it has not been added to the meat already.

  5. Top with cheese (melt with the microwave if the other ingredients are not already hot) and hot sauce. Eat and enjoy!

Recipe Notes

This makes one bowl. It is easy to make multiple servings by multiplying the ingredient amounts.

  1. I think Uruguay is very rarely known as a tourist spot. It is mostly known for its Football team who won a FIFA world cup title. From your post I came to know that it is a beautiful place to be visited. Coastal area, lighthouse and even the streets gives the resemblance of the colonial period. This dish from Uruguay sounds very new. But it looks very tasty. Anyways wish you a happy journey.

    1. Yes! I agree, it is not well known as a tourist spot. Perhaps because Buenos Aires gets a lot of the credit. Colonia Del Sacramento was very colonial in the old part of the town and it was great to be able to see it’s history.
