So you know how my week started off? Oh let’s say pretty dreadful. It just continued to get worse! The nail in my tire happened to be too far on the sidewall and nobody would patch or plug it. So, that left me with my baby donut tire until I could get it fixed.

Fact: I was told I shouldn’t drive more than 25 miles on it.

Reality: I didn’t think I could go to get it fixed while in the ICU at all. AKA I’d be way over the 25 mile limit.

Fact: I was told I shouldn’t drive more than 50 miles per hour on it.

No.... like for real....
No…. like for real….

Reality: When he told me this I looked at him like he was crazy. Obviously he didn’t realize the implications of this because the highway is a place where I feel like I often have to risk my life- even when I have a normal tire. Let’s break it down:
1. The people drive on this highway often at 90 mph.
2. The on ramp is short and I have to immediately merge over 3 lanes of traffic because the two lanes on the right very quickly go to a different highway. That means, my moves have to be quick.
3. This may not be a problem for some, however my little car, well, let’s just say, acceleration is not really it’s “thing”. Petal to the metal gets me 0-60 in oh like 20 seconds. Haha needless to say it can be scary when I need to accelerate quickly and it just doesn’t happen.

Now take all of that now with the addition of not being able to go more than 50 mph…. I was like.. OHH… this is not going to be good…not good at all. I was trying to think about alternatives. I actually asked him if maybe he would just put back my old tire on. He then gave me the are you serious look? I thought maybe I’d just try to fill it up when it needed it. I mean Hey! It wasn’t totally flat..yet. But I knew I’d be all like:

And then I’d do something drastic like perhaps:

But then I thought.. I need my duct tape for moving. So no go.

Technically, there is an alternate route. When I first moved in, I tried both ways. I remember thinking to myself to never go the other way if at all possible. Let’s just say it gets super sketch very quickly. I debated it for awhile, but decided that I would easily be more likely to hit a pot hole, or drive over something that would puncture my tire that way. Plus, it would take me so much longer. I already have to be up when it’s still dark :(. I didn’t want to make it even worse. Risk v benefits analysis completed. I decided to test my fate on the highway.

Obviously, I survived since I’m typing out this post, but it was terrible. Trying to not go over 50 was really hard and people were racing around me. I pretty much just tried to not make eye contact with anyone. I figured that would be the best. I’m sure I got plenty of evil eyes and some choice words in my direction. AKA caused some serious road rage all like:

Ahem..this would normally be me…So I can’t even be mad if people were hating. Hence, my decision just to NOT make eye contact and focus on my speed.

Oh well. Thankfully, I only had to do that for a few days and ta-da! I now have a new tire! It took me forever to get to the place, but they were generous enough to stay open late and help me out. Whoot whoot! Very exciting. It’s glorious not having to worry about blowing out my baby donut tire, or having to focus that long on my speedometer. Success! Work even got a bit better towards the end of the week and my patients did wonderfully! Double success! Wish me luck though, I’m on call tomorrow. So, it’s pretty much just me v ICU all day.  I’m just saying..I plan on winning 😉

Hope you guys have a fantastic work-free weekend, though! If you get a chance, why not try some baked oatmeal?!

Have you guys had to deal with a flat tire? How did it go?

Ingredients
Servings: bowl
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease an oven safe bowl
  2. Peel and cut up your orange
  3. Add orange and all other ingredients to a mixing bowl
  4. Add liquid of choice (I use water) until desired consistency. (More liquid=more baking time)
  5. Use a spatula to pour oatmeal into greased bowl and place in oven
  6. Cook for ~25 minutes or until cooked through.
Recipe Notes
  1. I use a lot of liquid because I use a lot of psyllium. (go low and increase slowly if you are not used to psyllium). It- in the addition to the oats and protein- soak up a lot of water. Although it takes longer to cook, for me, adding more liquid gives me a lot more to eat in the morning.
  2. I cut up my orange with kitchen scissors because it makes for quicker work
  3. Adjust your liquid and cooking time to your preferences
